The purpose of the Water Pipe Size calculator is to provide a simplified method of sizing water pipe. A street pressure system is where water is supplied from a public water main and the pressure is sufficient to supply all fixtures and equipment in a building without the use of a pressure boosting system. This generally requires that the static pressure in the public main be no less than 50 pounds per square inch (psi).
Acceptable design of the water distribution system is intended to provide an adequate quantity of water at acceptable pressures to all fixtures and equipment during periods of maximum building demand and minimum pressure. The actual quantity of water used varies with the building usage, time of day and building occupancy.
The criteria used to prepare this pipe sizing calculator is based on ASTM B88, type “L” hard temper seamless copper water tube. This will allow the calculator to be used for plastic pipe also. If steel pipe, schedule 40 is used, reduce the flow rate by 5 percent. The limiting factor for maximum flow rate is a velocity not to exceed 8 feet per second (fps). Interpolate to find intermediate values of gpm and velocity.
In general, the Water Pipe Size calculator wheel is a conservative method of pipe sizing.
Each Calculator Wheel is double–sided, 9” in diameter.
Calculator wheels are designed for use by: Plumbing Engineers, Plumbing Designers, Plumbing Specifiers, Master Plumbers and Contractors.
