Registration is now open for the Opening and Closing Sessions of The Water Research Foundation’s Virtual International Water Research Summit on Environmental Surveillance of COVID-19 Indicators in Sewersheds. During the Opening Session on April 27, a range of presenters from both the scientific and water sectors will provide a snapshot of the current state of knowledge on wastewater sampling, molecular genetics tools, use of indicator concentrations to estimate disease prevalence, and how to communicate this information to stakeholders.

The Closing Session, to be held April 30, will present new recommended practices from Working Groups, who were tasked with exploring best practices in four areas:
- Standardized procedures for collection, preservation, and archiving of wastewater samples
- Use of molecular genetics tools to identify the concentration of indicators of COVID-19 in wastewater samples
- Use of indicator concentrations to inform trends and estimates of community prevalence
- How to communicate environmental surveillance results with the public health community, elected officials, wastewater workers, and the public
In addition to recommended practices, the Working Groups will also share concrete recommendations for near-term research priorities that could fill knowledge gaps in each of the four areas. Details on WRF’s plans to solicit partners and fund this research will also be shared.
