November 2021 From the President’s Pen: Looking Forward to the Holidays

Ultimately, ASPE members voted for the traditional optimist. I am the “find the bright spot” person. Not surprising to those who know me, I love the holidays. I even cherish the lesser-celebrated holidays such as St Patrick’s Day. This year, however, I think the timeline is skewed. The calendar, for me, is flying by like a rocket. I am confident that Thanksgiving is colliding with Christmas. I wonder if this is the case for others. I do hear the same sentiment.

As the holidays kick into high gear, ASPE also is continuing to provide more for our members and our industry. We have new articles on ASPE Pipeline from many of our Board members; the Legionella Design Guide is being reviewed by our members; the Finance Committee and the Certification Committee are in full swing. Speaking of committees, the Legislative and Membership Committees are amazing; the Long-Range Planning Committee is aggressive; the Technical & Research Committee is steady; and the Education Committee is evolving.

What all of this means for our members is more. It means more opportunities to volunteer and provide more for us all.

As we approach the end of the year, we tend to think about what is next. What can we do with this amazing life? Where do we want to be in a year? What do we want to be doing? What do we have to offer?

A coworker of mine recently passed his FPE. I was so happy for him—the excitement in his voice, the excitement for his life. I have mentioned this same young man before, and it is amazing to see his life progress in a manner that guarantees he will have a great career. When I hear those life questions above, I think about him. Similarly, ASPE gave me great access to knowledge and contacts to help me have a successful career. I have had the opportunity to support others. At the end of the day, it is a pyramid—or the effect we have on each other and the industry.

The Legionella Design Guide Working Group has dedicated many hours to provide a document that will impact our industry. Members, please take time to provide your comments. This is the next step prior to public comment. This process will make for a quality document.
