July 2021 From the President’s Pen: Join Us in San Diego!

These are exciting times for ASPE and the country as we head toward peace and recovery. On all fronts, I look to the positive momentum of who we are as a people. We have had so much to focus on this last year, keeping ASPE moving forward, keeping our families well, finding a work/life balance, mourning lost friends, and adapting to change.

There are a million statements on how change is a guarantee in life. I choose, though, something that my granny would say: There is a guarantee the world will change; however, your life is changed by you. I suspect that her outlook was based on a little bit of faith and was a whole experience on her part.

Change in our world is resilience. Our work is making code-compliant buildings or the best plumbing and fire protection products and systems to best support our clients. Whether you’re a manufacturer, a contractor, or a plumbing designer or engineer, we all have had the proverbial door rocked off its hinges. If plumbing ever had a decade of importance, it is this decade. We have encountered all of the hot topics: waterborne pathogens, lead pipes, frozen pipes, sick buildings, natural disasters. I have heard plumbing mentioned in the news more than any other building system. What does this mean to all of us? That we are accountable and recognizable. Our professional demands are higher than ever. It is best to be informed, know what products are available, and base designs on current methodologies—to know your profession and products well.

We all know that from a designer’s standpoint, many titles can come with your job description: engineer, designer, project manager, technical manager, etc. At the end of the day, the design professional defines the systems for compliance with codes and meets the owner’s needs. All professionals at the end of the day need to be at the top of their profession, and the 2021 ASPE Tech Symposium can help.

The ASPE Tech Symposium is the leading continuing education event for plumbing professionals, and it offers so much for everyone. Yes, it is a wonderful time to see your friends in the plumbing community, but it is so much more.

We will have five tracks of technical sessions that are designed to teach you the most current design techniques with hands-on calculations and examples. You will have access to all of the most current information. Each session offers 0.15 CEUs that you can use for your licenses and certifications. This is the premier event for a plumbing industry professional.

The ASPE Tech Symposium is the one technical education event you don’t want to miss. Attention has been paid to details. The Product Show will be quite an event as well. There is no better option this year to see what is new with our manufacturers. They are so excited to see you that we needed to expand the space to accommodate all of them.

Our 2021 Tech Symposium will be kicked off with a welcome party sponsored by Charlotte Pipe. Another special event is our AYP Leadership Academy on Thursday, September 23, with an AYP networking event at Park & Rec on Saturday, September 25.

I have attended these events as a member, as a Chapter leader, and as the President. I have always been thrilled to see our members, my colleagues, my friends, and the plumbing community at its best.

The 2021 ASPE Tech Symposium is being held at the San Diego Marriott Mission Valley. Go to the hotel’s website and discover that it is a great place to take your family for maybe an extra vacation day. The hotel is located near Mission Beach is a trolley-ride away from Mission Bay, Old Town, and the Gaslamp District. The hotel has a great pool area and great travel appeal.

Personally, I have not travelled much lately and think I need a vacation day as a tourist. The San Diego Zoo and Lego Land would brighten my traveling spirit!

I reach out to all of you. It is time to recharge and improve your technical skill set. This year will be a great Tech Symposium. Let’s get registered and look at the opportunity of more knowledge!

Collectively we make a team working together for the betterment of ASPE. We as a Board and Staff are dedicated to keeping ASPE strong and providing more for our members. Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard. Special thanks go to Staff and the Education Committee. Your work only makes ASPE better.

We are excited to see you all at the Tech Symposium!
