Get to Know Ryan LaFalam

We are pleased to introduce the next featured member in our Get to Know initiative: Ryan LaFalam, PE, a member of the Boston Chapter.

ASPE: What is your favorite animal? Why?
Ryan: Black Angus Cattle. My cousin, uncle, and I raise them in a family-owned pasture next to my house to feed family and friends. We currently have five head.

ASPE: What are your hobbies outside of work?
Ryan: Hunting, fishing, farming, hobby woodworking, maple sugaring, snowmobiling, and golf.

ASPE: What do you do to relax?
Ryan: Weekend getaways without the kids and sitting in a tree stand out in the woods.

ASPE: Do you have a nickname? How did you get it?
Ryan: Yes: “Turtle.” It was my father’s nickname growing up. I started playing softball with my father, and everyone started calling me “Little Turtle” or “Turtle Junior.” As more of my friends began to play, it morphed back into just “Turtle.”

ASPE: What is your favorite meal? Is it prepared at home or found at a restaurant?
Ryan: Surf and turf: filet mignon with broiled scallops made at home. My wife makes it every Valentine’s Day.

ASPE: What is one interesting ability you have or an interesting fact about yourself?
Ryan: The summer after I graduated college, my cousin and I filled our backpacks and traveled overseas for about two months. We spent a month in Tanzania helping to build an elementary school and then a month traveling around Europe.

ASPE: What is your proudest accomplishment?
Ryan: Marrying my wife and having three kids.

ASPE: What is your favorite holiday and why?
Ryan: Thanksgiving. There is a lot of food and the opportunity to spend quality time with family, and it’s less chaotic than Christmas.

ASPE: What is your favorite game or sport to watch and play?
Ryan: I enjoy watching rugby (when it’s on). I played rugby in college and have been fond of it ever since. I enjoy playing football. Every year we get a group together to play touch football on Thanksgiving Day morning.
