British Columbia Announces New Energy Performance Standards for Residential Boilers

The British Columbia Energy Efficiency Standards for Residential Gas Boilers require residential boilers manufactured after January 1, 2022 to have an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) equal to or greater than 90 percent efficient. The standard covers residential boilers and combo-boilers. The new minimum energy performance standard aligns with the updated federal residential boiler standard, which takes effect on July 1, 2023. Product certification, labeling, and reporting requirements are harmonized with the existing federal standards as well as the federal standards coming into effect on July 1, 2023.

The standard is part of the B.C. Energy Efficiency Standards Regulation (EESR), under the Energy Efficiency Act. The EESR is a point-of-sale regulation that regulates energy-using products. A six-week stakeholder consultation for the proposed standard was held in September 2019. The updated standard was approved and ordered as part of the seventh amendment to the B.C. EESR in February 2021.

As the effective date for manufacturing is approaching, stakeholder associations are encouraged to remind their membership of the change. For detailed information, please see the Regulatory Bulletin | Residential Gas Boilers.
