2021 Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction Is Available for Download

The Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC), hosted by the UN Environment Program (UNEP), has released the 2021 Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction.

This year’s report develops on the sector’s 36 percent of global final energy consumption and 37 percent of energy-related CO2 emissions, as compared to other end-use sectors. Although the 2020 data show a reduction of emissions within the sector (10 percent lower than in 2015, the lowest level since 2007), this is a result largely due to lockdowns in response to COVID-19, which slowed down economies, reduced access to energy, and decreased construction activities. While efforts to decarbonize the sector played a small role in the reduction of emissions, a fundamental change within the buildings and construction sector is needed to reach the objectives of the Paris Agreement. The global buildings and construction sector must work collectively and with all stakeholders to decarbonize by 2050. The economic recovery period post-COVID-19 offers transformation opportunities that should be seized by stakeholders of the sector to move forward the decarbonization efforts and build back better, while answering the growing demand for building floor space and the need for efficient energy services.
