ASPE’s PEWG Makes Strides to Include a Plumbing Option in the PE Exam

ASPE’s PEWG (Professional Engineer Working Group) has been working with NCEES (National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying) to advance the development of a Professional Engineer (PE) exam for plumbing/piping within the Mechanical Engineering suite of exams.

Recently, a PAKS (Professional Activities and Knowledge Study) was conducted to gauge interest in this idea and to determine the knowledge and skills required of a licensed plumbing engineer. Based on the results, 275 Professional Engineers participated in the plumbing portion of the survey. Those results will be reviewed and tabulated by Pearson VUE in preparation for a June meeting during which the PAKS Committee, along with ASPE representatives, will work on developing the blueprint for the PE exam specification.

Once the exam specification has been finalized, it will be provided to the EPE (Examinations for Professional Engineers) Committee for review against the NCEES’ policies, procedures, and guidelines. The EPE Committee votes on whether or not to approve each exam blueprint. With a majority vote in favor, Exam Services proceeds with developing the exam based on the  approved blueprint. With a majority vote against, no further action is taken regarding the development of the exam. Thus, ASPE and the PEWG will continue to work with the NCEES committees and its membership to advance our efforts.

Further updates will be provided as they become available. For more information on the PEWG’s efforts, please contact Working Group Chair, David Dexter, at [email protected].
