PEDH Volume 1…
Volume 1 of the Plumbing Engineering Design Handbook has been sent to all of the members in good standing. If you have not already received your copy, you should within the next few days. The book has been updated in its entirety and thanks go out to everyone that was involved with the production of this latest volume. As you open up the book, you will see that this volume has been dedicated to the memory of Norman Parks.
Grassroots Budget Meeting…
The 2010 version of the Grassroots Budget Meeting will be held tomorrow, March 13th from 10 AM to 1 PM Central Time. You should have already registered to participate in the event via webcast and received a copy of the budget. Hopefully you have had a chance to review the budget and have a few questions prepared for the meeting. Our President, Julius Ballanco and Treasurer Gary Mahoney will be on hand to present the budget and answer all of your questions.
CPD Exam…
There has been a lot of interest in the CPD exam this year and the deadline for registering is next Friday, March 19th. Achieving the CPD designation is a great way to increase your value to your employer in these difficult economic times. It is also a great way for your employer to market your firm and show potential clients that their engineering team is highly qualified and capable of delivering a well designed product. The exam will be offered on April 16th and 17th depending on your location. Don’t forget, there are practice exams available on the ASPE website.
Four Part CPD Review Webinar Series…
The Society is offering a four part CPD Review Webinar Series to help those who are planning on taking the CPD exam and the webinars will be held on 3/23, 3/30, 4/6 and 4/13. The webinars start at 2 PM Eastern Time, last one hour and will include some sample problems.
The four part series costs $275 for members and $395 for non-members. Registration includes one free online CPD Review Practice Test ($75 value) and a free CPD Review Manual ($79.95 value).
If you do not want to sign-up for the entire series, individual webinars are also available. Individual webinars are $75 for members and $135 for non-members but do not include the free Practice Test and free CPD Review Manual.
Esteban Cabello, PE, FASSE of the Eastern Michigan Chapter will be the presenter for each of the webinars. Please see the ASPE website for more detailed information about each of the webinars.
Elections…
Elections are quickly approaching and as I read through your newsletters, it is very apparent that every Chapter is looking for some new faces on their Boards. With those new faces come some new ideas that will help your Chapter and ASPE grow over the next few years. It is always difficult to convince someone to run for a position on the Board but if you focus on your core group of members who always attend your monthly meetings, you are off to a great start. Those members have a heightened interest in their profession and in ASPE and would be great candidates for a position on your Board.
In addition to the elections at the Chapter level, elections will also be taking place at the Convention in Philadelphia for the Society Board of Directors. If you are interested in running for a position on the Board and would like a little more information, please let me know. I will be glad to answer all of your questions.
How Fast Can it Go…
As you may have already read in the Pipeline, the Society is bringing back the popular “How Fast Can it Go” car races which will be held at the Philadelphia Convention. Rules and materials will be sent out at a later date but Chapters should start developing ideas for their entries. Hopefully Region 2 will be well represented at the races.
Region 2 Highlights…
I must say, there sure are some great seminars being presented around the Region. I am also starting to see a few discussions regarding golf outings. That means one thing, spring is around the corner and all this snow we have been receiving will soon be out of here. Here is the latest from around the Region:
· The Buffalo-Niagara Chapter recently presented a lunch time seminar on Gas Fired Instantaneous Domestic Water Heaters.
· A Fire Pump Sizing and Selection Program will be presented by the Central Indiana Chapter this month. The Chapter is also waiting to hear if they have been appointed to sit on the State Code Committee.
· The Central Ohio Chapter will be presenting a seminar this month titled Mini-Water Treatment System for Developing Countries.
· The Cleveland Chapter hosted an Integrated Fire Protection Systems seminar this week. They have also organized a Wastewater Treatment Plant Tour that will take place in April.
· Part 2 of the CPD prep class will be presented by the Eastern Michigan Chapter later this month. They will also be presenting a design class titled Pumping System Optimization & Applications: Variable Speed Pumping. Congratulations also go out to V.P. Technical, Edwin Hawley who was honored as the Engineer of the Year at the joint ASPE/ASSE Awards Banquet.
· Last month, the Johnstown Chapter had to launch Plan ‘B’ for their meeting because their speaker had to cancel due to poor weather conditions. The Chapter was quick to present a documentary from the History Channel titled “The Arteries of Civilization” which reviewed the history of plumbing. This month the Chapter held their March meeting under much better weather conditions and had a joint meeting with their local ASHRAE Chapter. Their presentation was on Recovering Waste Condenser Water and Using Geothermal Heat Sources for Water Heating.
· The Pittsburgh Chapter was also affected by the bad weather last month. This month they had a presentation and discussion on Revit / BIM.
· The Rochester Chapter will be presenting an On Demand Water Heater seminar later this month.
· A Comparisons of Hot Water Boiler / Storage Tank vs. Tank Type Heater for Commercial Applications seminar will be presented by the Southwestern Ohio Chapter.
· The Western Michigan Chapter hosted their annual trade show this week. The show was a combined effort between the Western Michigan PHCC and ASHRAE. They are also presenting a two part seminar before the show.

- The Region 2 President’s Meeting will be held this year on June 4th and 5th in Pittsburgh.
- Please start assembling a list of potential Delegates and Alternates from your Chapter for the Convention.
