IRS and State Filings

This is aremindertoall Chapters. The deadlineis fast approaching foreachChapterto filethe necessary federal tax form
with the IRS and the statetax formand updated corporatedofficers form withtheappropriatestateauthorities.
Although the Chapters are501(c)(6) not–for–profit entities [eachChapter should haveits own Federal IDNumberand
shouldberegistered with theState (wherenecessary)]theChapter may still beliableto pay taxes.
Generally, nonprofit organizations areexempt from taxes on all incomereceived that is relatedto theirexempt purpose
and $1,000 of income(net gross) received as related to non–exempt purposes. However, a nonprofit organization that earns
in excess of $25,000gross income has a federal and statepaperwork requirement and must filefederal tax form 990. There
is notaxationontheincomeearned that is related totheexempt purposeoftheorganization, onlya filing requirement.
Because each state has its own requirements, Chapter treasurers and Presidents are encouraged to engage a local accoun-
tant to help them with the necessary paperwork. At the current time, the Society does not offer, nor can it provide any support
for federal orstatefilings.
