Board of Directors
The Board meets on a quarterly basis for a two-day meeting. Meetings are typically conducted at the Society’s Chicago
office, in a location that is a potential site for a Convention or Symposium or at the Society’s annual event. Board meetings
are where Society matters are discussed and policies are established that set the tone and direction of the Society, and provide
organizational priorities.
Every meeting is documented and available to the membership on request. Highlights of the discussions are prepared and
forwarded to the Region Chairperson for dissemination to the chapter leadership. In addition to the quarterly meetings, the
Board conducts a conference call in non–meeting months. Communications are also enhanced utilizing electronic media and
the Internet. Your Board of Directors considers itself in contact on a 7/24 basis.
The Society office and staff, and the numerous specialized committees and sub–committees provideinvaluable support to
the Board. Each Board vice–president has a supporting committee. In addition, there are the Certification and By-Laws
committees and the Convention and Symposium Chairpersons and committees. The Exhibitors Advisory Committee, headed
by our affiliate Liaison Representative to the Society Board, provides support to the Engineered Plumbing Exposition. In all,
there are 700 to 1,000 volunteers at all levels to assist in the operations of the Society. To the many who contribute to the
wealth of ASPE and especially to those unsung heroes at the local level — Thank You.

Region Chairpersons
The Region Chairs are the key communications link between the Society Board (each board member is assigned as a Region
Director) and the Chapter officers. For coordination purposes the Society has seven representative delineations. For North
America there are the five region delineations each with 11 to 14 Chapters: West, Midwest, Great Lakes, Northeast and
Southeast. In addition, there are Overseas and At–Large delineations.
Each Region Chair is responsible for maintaining close and regular communications with the chapter officers and to be
available for assistance in the operations, procedures and governance of a chapter. Prior to becoming a Region Chairs, most
individuals have served as a chapter officer. They are intimately awareof the many issues each chapter faces and are the first
to be aware of a Chapter’s problems or difficulties.
Region Chairs visit each chapters on an as-needed basis. Each meets with the Society Board of Directors once a year at the
Convention or the Symposium and meets with a specific Board member at the annual Region Chapter Presidents’ Meeting
held every June. In addition, a conference call with the Society President, to discuss chapter and regional issues, is conducted
monthly.

Chapter Officers
An annual Region Chapter President’s Meeting is held each year with thechapter officers (usually the chapter president and
the Vice–President, Technical). This meeting provides the perfect opportunity for the chapter leadership to freely express
themselves and open dialogue and discussions of local concern.
With all the Chapters represented, the officers are able to share their experiences in a peer–to–peer environment. Positive
as well as negative issues are encourage and thoroughly discussed. Concerns are acted on or passed to the Society Board or
office for further attention or action. I have attended many of these meetings, and each time I go away impressed with the
wisdom and energy the chapter leadership exhibits.
One major purpose of the June meeting is to help train the new officers in their duties for the coming term. Another is to
act as sounding board and a forum for the chapter officers to seek out resolutions to their concerns. These meeting generate
excellent ideas. During the meetings, the Region Directors present the current activities of Society to the attendees. In
addition, the chapters seize the opportunity to raise their questions concerning national issues.
Once the chapter leadership receives the information from the Region Chairs or the national board member (Region
Director) at the meetings or through other means such Society publications or e-mail, they contact their own local board to
relay information applicable to the membership. Constant communication is important and each person at each level is
encouraged to keep one another informed.

How We Work
With this organization structure, the general Society membership should be comfortable that there areavailable communica-
tions links for them. No member should ever feel that he/she is unable to seek a solution or simply discuss his/her concerns.
