From the President’s Pen
David Chin. P.E., CPD
To appreciate what exists often requires nothing more than having a basic knowledge and under-
standing of how something operates. This is especially true for the membership of ASPE. Do you
understand how the Society operates? Just what makes our organization “tick”? In a “nutshell,” the
answer is . . .
ASPE has three distinct levels of leadership — each with its own set of responsibilities — the
national Board of Directors (BoD), the Regional Chairpersons, and the Chapter officers. The first
level, the elected Board of Directors, communicates the Society’s policy–making decisions to the
five Region Chairpersons. It is the Region Chairs who are the links between the BoD and the
chapter officers. It is the responsibility of each Chapter President to continue the communications
link and pass the word on to the chapter board of directors and the membership. Although these are
the direct routes of communication, any ASPE member can go directly to any other leadership level
with his/her input. Communication interaction is encouraged, especially direct contact with the So-
ciety office.
