1980s

1980: The Central Ohio Chapter is chartered (October 25).

1980: The Minnesota Chapter is chartered (November 24).

1980: ASPE publishes its first single-topic handbook, Solar Energy System Design.

1980: The ASPE Convention is held in Atlanta. The elected board of directors for the 1980–1982 term is as follows.

  • President: A. Calvin Laws
  • Vice President, Technical: Russell H. Calderwood
  • Vice President, Legislative: O.J. French (George W. Runkle is appointed VPL in 1982)
  • Vice President, Membership: Philip L. French
  • Administrative Secretary: William P. Schaefer
  • Treasurer: Richard Ellis (Daniel  Johnson becomes treasurer mid-term)

1981: The ASPE Chapter Award of merit is established to honor significant accomplishment by individual chapters.

1981: ASPE inaugurates an internal newsletter, “ASPE Board Review” to establish a direct link between the national leadership and individual members.

1981: ASPE board of directors appoints Daniel W. Johnson the first ASPE historian (January 9).

1981: Wen-Yung W. Chan is hired as the Society’s first technical director.

1981: The first ASPE Technical Symposium is held in Dallas.

1982: John Shaw begins his tenure as ASPE’s executive director (January ).

1982: The Southwest Ohio Chapter is chartered (February 26).

1982: The Palmetto State Chapter is chartered (August 31).

1982: The Pittsburgh Chapter is chartered (October 15).

1982: The ASPE Convention is held in Boston. The elected board of directors for the 1982–1984 term is as follows:

  • President: A. Calvin Laws
  • Vice President, Technical: William P. Schaefer
  • Vice President, Legislative: Philip L. French
  • Vice President, Membership: John E. Matthews
  • Administrative Secretary: Bernard J. McCarty
  • Treasurer: Daniel Johnson

1983: The American River Chapter is chartered (May 1).

1983: The Central Florida Chapter is chartered (November 1).

1983: ASPE publishes its second single-topic handbook, Pumps and Pump Systems.

1984: The Nashville Chapter is chartered (September 6).

1984: ASPE’s Honor Roll of Employers is established to recognize companies whose employees participate in Society programs and activities.

1984: The ASPE Convention is held in Chicago. The elected board of directors for the 1984–1986 term is as follows:

  • President: Philip L. French
  • Vice President, Technical: William P. Schaefer
  • Vice President, Legislative: Bernard J. McCarty
  • Vice President, Membership: John E. Matthews
  • Administrative Secretary: Larry E. Smith

1985: The Intermountain Chapter is chartered (January 31).

1985: The Silicon Valley Chapter is chartered (November 21).

1986: The Michigan Chapter changes name to the Eastern Michigan Chapter (February).              

1986: The Western Michigan Chapter is chartered (September 18).

1986: The Wisconsin Chapter is chartered (September 19).

1986: The ASPE Convention is held in Miami. The elected board of directors for the 1986–1988 term is as follows:

  • President: Philip L. French
  • Vice President, Technical: William P. Schaefer
  • Vice President, Legislative: Bernard J. McCarty
  • Vice President, Membership: Kenneth G. Wentink

1987: Delta purchases Plumbing Engineer from Construction Industry Press.

1988: The New Mexico Chapter is chartered (January 12).

1988: The Piedmont Chapter is chartered (August 1).

1988: The ASPE Convention is held in Long Beach, California. The elected board of directors for the 1988–1990 term is as follows:

  • President: William P. Schaefer
  • Vice President, Technical: Bernard J. McCarty
  • Vice President, Legislative: Michael Granata
  • Vice President, Membership: Kenneth G. Wentink
  • Administrative Secretary: William C. Stewart

1989: The Hawaii Chapter ceases operation (May).
